NHS England has now published the Educator Development Fundamentals, a new framework designed to support the development of healthcare educators across the NHS workforce.
The guide sets out nine core capability areas that define the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to deliver high-quality education, supervision, and assessment across healthcare in England. These include:
- Supporting safe care through educational practice
- Equality, diversity and inclusion
- Creasting and sustaining a positive learning environment
- Teaching and facilitating learning
- Enhancing learning through effective assessment
- Supporting and monitoring educational progress
- Promoting personal and professional development
- Continuing professional development as an educator
- Digital skills and capabilities within education and learning
For each capability area, the framework outlines behaviours associated with both effective and excellent practice, supporting reflection and development for educators at every stage of their career, from those new to educational roles through to experienced practitioners.
The framework has been developed to support improvements in education, supervision, and assessment, helping to strengthen patient safety, quality of care and the future NHS workforce. It is intended to be used flexibly by educators, providers, and commissioners, and complements existing professional standards rather than replacing them.
