We welcome the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians statement apologising to resident doctors; the recognition that this will have a significant impact on those affected, the offer of individualised support and the acknowledgement of the need to learn lessons.
There have been several data processing errors in recent years. Whilst lessons should be learnt and all efforts made to avoid similar errors in the future, it is unlikely that these can be completely avoided. Therefore, a broader review of how educational institutions respond to such situations is merited. The important principles are of patient safety, transparency, honesty and compassion and mitigation of impact for the individuals affected.
We welcome discussions on flexible approaches that account for significant delays in error identification, including targeted derogations where appropriate, to ensure individuals are not unfairly disadvantaged while maintaining the high professional standards required for safe and effective patient care.
As an organisation that represents Directors of Medical Education and other education leaders, we are committed to supporting those who provide training and through them, supporting resident doctors themselves in this very difficult situation.
